About the Doctor

Dr. Mithoefer is an internationally recognized, double board certified Orthopedic sports medicine specialist focusing on shoulder and knee injuries.

He completed his residency training in the Harvard Orthopedic Residency Program followed by extensive fellowship training in Orthopedic Trauma, Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Harvard and the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Mithoefer has been awarded Top Doctor for both Castle Connolly and Boston Magazine for many years, has published more than 100 scientific articles and book chapters and is a frequent speaker at national and international orthopedic meetings. Dr. Mithoefer is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at Tufts University and Co-Director of joint preservation at New England Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Mithoefer has more than 15 years of clinical expertise performing minimally-invasive and complex knee and shoulder reconstructions and revision surgeries. Treatment begins with a careful assessment of the cause of the injury, thorough clinical examination and individualized diagnostic testing. A personalized treatment program is then developed using non-operative or, if needed, surgical treatment methods that help to optimize the safe return to work. Due to his unique expertise with both surgical and non-surgical orthopedic treatment methods, Dr. Mithoefer regularly applies these innovative, state-of-the-art biologic treatments to facilitate the healing process. Similar to returning an athlete back to play, Dr.Mithoefer’s goal is to get the injured worker “back in the game” safely while also helping to prevent potential recurrent injury in the future.

Dr. Mithoefer is a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Based on his long-standing expertise with work-related injuries, Dr. Mithoefer provides comprehensive and compassionate care with direct access to experienced workman’s compensation coordinators to facilitate expedited appointments for patients with work-related injuries. In addition to the emphasis on accessibility, close communication and cooperation with patients, adjusters, case managers, and legal representatives is emphasized throughout the course of the treatment to optimize quality of care and to facilitate an individualized and safe return to work.
